What is Neuro Linguistic Programming? Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is about communication, not just with other people but between our conscious and our unconscious minds. Our unconscious mind does what it believes we want it to do, if we are not getting the results we expect then the messages we are sending are not clear.  NLP is a bit like an instruction book for our mind, we get our unconscious mind to give us the results we expect by ensuring the information we provide it are clear and concise. Neuro Linguistic Programming Books are a great way to introduce NLP and start training our unconscious minds to give us the results we want. How NLP works Starting in the 1970s, NLP is based on the idea that our sensory experiences create an internal ‘map’ of the world and we operate from that ‘map’. This ‘map’ may contain biases or limitations (bad habits or patterns of thought) based on our sensory experiences, NLP identifies these biases or limitations and then seeks to modify them.  As an example, you will have tried lots of new things as a child, some of these will have gone well, some will not have done. Uncategorized / 08/12/2018

What is Anger? Anger is an emotion or feeling usually felt when someone has been unfair or unkind towards you or someone else. I’m sure many of you have felt that intense feeling building up inside you as if you are going to burst, and quite often blurted something out and maybe felt guilty later on when the anger has subsided. Is this a problem? Generally speaking no, in fact anger does have a few positives e.g. recognise if someone is hurting us, make us realise that we may need to make a change and can give us a burst of energy ‘fight or flight’ response. So when does it become a problem? Basically if your anger is out of control, regularly hurting yourself or others around you and having a negative impact on your life you may need to address the problem. Anger can also lead to aggression, this doesn’t just include the physical, outward aggression but also inward aggression – hating yourself, denying yourself things that make you happy and even self harming. Then there is passive aggression – making it obvious to others that you are angry – blanking or not responding to others, being sulky, refusing…

Cognitive: ‘connected with thinking or conscious mental processes’ (Cambridge Dictionary) Behavioural: ‘relating to behaviour’ (Cambridge Dictionary) Therapy: ‘ a treatment that helps someone feel better, grow stronger etc. Especially after an illness‘ (Cambridge Dictionary)   Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT is usually classed as a ‘talking therapy’ whose aim is to help you understand that your thoughts and actions can affect your mood and how you feel. CBT then is used to change the negative or maladaptive thoughts or to change the way you react to those thoughts. Basic stages of CBT assessment; Identify a behaviour, Does the behaviour show as an excess or deficit? Identify the frequency, duration and intensity of the behaviour. If an excess, aim to decrease the duration or intensity If a deficit, aim to increase frequency, duration and intensity Using these stages it can be seen how rather than diagnosing to find an illness or disease, CBT concentrates on viewing the whole and then deciding what can be changed. Stress Management Handbook – Books to Help You Handle Stress
Uncategorized / 01/11/2018

Thinking back over the past month, how many times can you remember feeling stressed, hearing someone else say they are stressed or witnessed someone close to you displaying signs of stress? My own answer to this would be, ‘many times’. I have felt stressed at work and whilst driving, people at work have said they are stressed by deadlines and work pressure and my partner has displayed signs of stress at home such as being unusually quiet, appearing deep in thought and excessively tired. Sound familiar? Then maybe a stress management handbook could be the answer. What is Stress? Many people have heard of the ‘fight of flight’ response to danger, this is your bodies ‘stress response’. This stress response is generally triggered by a physical event such as having to take action to avoid an accident. The body releases a cocktail of hormones and chemicals into your body such as adrenaline, cortisol and norpinephrine. These hormones and chemicals prepare your body to stay and deal with the danger ‘fight’ or remove yourself from the danger ‘flight’. This stress response is completely normal and is what helped early man avoid dangers such as being attacked by a predator. Today…

There can’t be too many people who have not been anxious about an exam, driving test, medical examination etc. However if anxiety turns into a persistent and exaggerated fear that impacts on your day to day life or is accompanied by symptoms such as a sense of dread, feeling ‘on edge’, excessive sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness etc. then it is time to look for help. Phobias are an anxiety disorder, where the symptoms are similar to anxiety above but are generally triggered by a fear of an object, situation, animal or feeling. Again phobias can have a huge impact on a persons’ life, with sufferers organizing their lives to avoid situations which may trigger an attack. Many people dislike snakes and spiders but that doesn’t really affect their day to day lives. Some people however have a phobia of one or the other and will not be able to be in the vicinity of them without suffering severe…
